Real quick to respond to the questions that you asked, my name tag is ロ-ラ- pronounced ro ra. but there are all sorts of variations as to what they say... the Japanese do celebrate Christmas but, like most of the world they take the Christ out of Christmas, its just xmas out here for the most part. Our ward is having a huge Christmas party!! They have been planning forever.. and one of the main events they are having is a kind of rock Christmas song they have here.. called ma ke na i koto maybe Yamada's (friends in Alpine) has heard of it... anyway, they are having a band play and put a big stage up, and guess who are the singers?? ya thats right they nominated the elders to do it.. we had practice the other day, and its going to be a blast!! ha ha i cannot wait, i will be sure to get some pictures of it.. while on the Christmas subject, here is the time and number for you to call me!! but we only get 1 hr. here is our apartment number for you to call, we dont call you, you call me....can't wait to hear from you all!! things are great! love you very very much!!

Dec 9 to Dad

...well this week has been another week of miracles!
we gave Hayashi the word of wisdom commitment, at first it did not go good at all! he panicked, said it would be impossible and started saying we were going to have to move the date back.. by the end of the lesson he gave us his word that tomorrow he would stop, and would still get baptized on the 12th..(that night he went home and drank all the alcohol in his apartment, which i guess is a lot because he said he threw up twice) haha i couldn't help but laugh.. as of today he is still keeping the word of wisdom! everything is looking on track for the baptism still! i'm really excited!!...we found some great new investigators this week! really excited and hope things take off with them.

Last Sunday was our missionary fireside for our ward, they gave an awesome presentation, i don't have the dvd yet, but as soon as i get it i will give it to them so they can put it in. the best part was when they did McKay Jacobsons video.. the old wide receiver for BYU, he is our zone leader, as you could imagine his highlight video was pretty sick! President Daniels was amazing too, he was at one point the 40 highest tax payer in japan, CEO of three major companies at once, including at&t japan. it was a great inspirational fireside.

yesterday was my first presidents interview! cant say i was not a little nervous.. but i took a lot from it. at the beginning he had both of us come in to review our numbers with him.. we looked through, in almost every category our numbers were above mission average! in five categories, we were top 5. and we were leading in appointments made. than after he looked at us and said i don't tell everyone this, but i want you two to be the standard. set the bar. i think you two can lead the mission, do it! he said we were the youngest companionship, but he thinks we have the most potential.. wow that really took me back. to see how much confidence our president had in us was amazing. the truth is we want to be the best! after that it was a great booster to get out there and prove that we can do great things.

...on a more personal night i had a very special experience dad.. i was just about to go to bed. i find right before i go to bed is when i receive a lot of personal revelation, or new ideas. about three nights ago i was thinking about what i would do after my mission. i could definetly see you in my job, i couldn't pick out what it was at first though, at first i thought maybe some kind of presentation, or speaker. than it came to me, and i could feel a very re assuring feeling, my heart began to beat very hard, and i knew with out a doubt what i was to do. I feel very strongly that i am supposed to be a chiropractor. as soon as the thought came in my mind i saw a wonderful and bright future, working together with you, going to school, even though it will be difficult. the more i think about it the more it seems right. i try now to put it off and focus on the work, but i thought i would let you know. and would love to hear some feedback.
hope everything is going great!!! would love to hear from the family! mail would be a nice.. love you all very much!!

Dec. 2 Con't

Well another week has gone by, the are going by a lot faster now! i cant believe it! this week was amazing!! Saturday night was a big one! We have been teaching a guy named Hayashi for about a week or so, taught him lesson one and two, and things have been going really well! we set some goals for him and it has been a miracle to see
how through our faith our goals are turning into a reality. so we gave him the commitement and he willingly excepted to be baptized by me on the 12 of december!!!! we know he has problems with a almost everything in the word of wisdom, and who knows what else, but he has a really srong desire and testimony at this point so i am confident that we can overcome those obstacles, and prepare him for baptizm. we found some really awesome other people this week, our teaching pool is really picking up. our numbers this last week crushed everyone elses in the district, we have been working really hard, we taught 9 lessons last week and contacted over sixty five people. a huge improvement on what we had done previous.

I went to my first zone conference this week, absoulutly amazing!! wow it was powerful stuff, i dont think i realized how amazing my mission president is! he took us on what he calls `deep dives` where we pick a gospel topic and go way deep into it. i learned a lot, we did the atonement and the book of mormon. powerful stuff. i dont think i realized how big of a bussiness person he was either.. when he said invited to be the main speaker at the annual CEO`s meeting, in Hong Kong, for over two thousand CEO'S, i realized he is a pretty big gunner. but he is way down to earth, loves sports, after zone we played in door softball with a nerf ball, in the church, and we said we had to go he said stay and play another game. he is really cool. he was mad at me i played tennis and did not invite him to play. won't make the mistake twice.

That is great to hear juan and cristina and leo are doing so good!! really happy for them as a side note, i finished the book of mormon this week that i started reading at the mtc, and i came across chapter 8 of moroni, at the appropriate time i would highly recommend that they read that you share that chapter with them.. i would like to know if my website has been updated?? if so could you print of the page and send it to me?? i would love to see what it looks like.

.. tonight we are teaching 3 lessons so Im really excited about that! things are continuing to progress.. the language is still extremely difficult, but i am slowly picking things up. i am starting to be able to teach more, and make better contacts. love you very much, excited to hear everything is going good!! miracles are real! i see them everyday! we only hold our selfs back from see the powers of heaven with our lack of knowledge and unbelief. i have been feasting on the gospel, there is so much i want to study. i would strongly encourage to learn more about the gospel, make sure as President Eyring said to refreshen our testimonies. there is so much to learn. recently i have been particularly interested in the church history, when we did our book of mormon deep dive, i learned a lot about the 3 witnesses, there is still a lot there to learn. have you heard of the chiasmus? the book of mormon is full of them! very interesting stuff. always read, pray, and study with a purpose, and you will be amazed at what you will learn! The Lord cannot hold back the mysteries of the world, we have the power to learn all things! when reading about the brother of jared, in either, i really got motivated!! i would really suggest to read that. the last conference in which Pres. Bruce McConkie spoke, he bore one of the most powerful testimonies, i would suggest reading it if you have not.
Love, Elder Lawler

Oh ,the kid in the 3rd picture is one of the kids in the ward. japanese kids are way way cute! old people are pretty scary though. me and my companion are pretty tall out here, but surprisingly, maybe its just cause we are further up north but the average height, is pretty tall! like most people are just a little shorter than me.. oh and one more favor, it says pretty specifically that we are to email family only, and i have really been trying to obey with exactness, so i will send separate emails, in response to emails from my friends, if you could just forward them to their email address for me that would be awesome!! thanks, love you all very much!
elder lawler!!

Nov. 25th

wow i thought i had a busy week!!! i cant believe all that happened with Cristina!! wow... looks like once again uncle dano missed out on more Lawler family fun! that is absolutely crazy.. im glad everything worked out! give my love to juan cristina and leo!!!! well to start off i will answer some of your questions and then list some little things i have need of..

...if you could send me my nike/jordan stickers, they were in a manila envelop i left them out, if you could send those to me that would be really nice so i could put them on my NEW BIKE!! its way sweet solid bike.

so here is what has been going on!!
this week has turned out to be amazing!!! last week was kind of crappy for finding and what not but the start of this week we have already done better than we did all of last week.. its only wend. and we have already taught 4 lessons, we have another 6 planned for the week, we have picked up 2 referrals, 4 new investigators, and taught two lessons with members!! yesterday was really good, we found more people yesterday than we usually do in 3 days. we have truly been blessed.

Sunday was way fun, we had an guy we contacted the Saturday night before come to church, which is almost un heard of, the ward was really excited to see a new investigator come. but than after sacrament meeting one of the sister members came up to me and started going off with really fast Japanese and i couldn't catch every thing she was saying, but i caught the work do you like to sing, and i said kind of, and then she said did you sing at church in utah, and i was like ya, but to her that meant i sang in front of the church, she asked another question i was not really sure what it meant, and i said yes, and she got really excited which made me nervous, then she walked off and my companion turned to me and said do you know what you just told her, and i said i have no idea.. he said she asked you if we would sing in two weeks and do a musical number for the ward and you said yes.. so i guess me and elder nelson are going to be doing a duet for the ward in two weeks!! what a nightmare!! i laughed for a while after that, i learned my lesson to not always fake like you know what someone is talking about..

.. right now we have six investigators we are teaching which is really really good out here! so i am really excited. things are slowly picking up and we are starting to see people progress and do well.. the food out here is way way good!! the noodles are really tasty and the rice is good, they have a lot of different types i like, but i have not been asked to eat fish yet so thats good...

guess what!!! on friday night guess what i did? played tennis!! it was really fun, one of the women who just got baptized her parents are somewhat interested and they play tennis like every day so when she found out i played tennis she set up a time for us to play. and the mission president was cool with it, so they picked us up and we went to this really nice resort place and played, the girls parents are way rich i guess. i surprisingly did really well, at first i kind of sucked, and the dad was pretty good, so we started playing and i smoked him!! my serves were on fire! just hit them as hard as i could and they would go in.. i drew quite the crowd, it was funny everyone was way amazed i guess there are not to many good tennis players in japan.. after every shot they would clap, it was kind of ridiculous.. but i had fun, I'm going to try and send you those pictures..

..well there is still a ton of snow on the ground but the roads are dry so we have been riding our bikes, its really fun/scary, one we are on the wrong side of the road and every time i go to turn i almost get hit because i forget, and two the cars pull right up next to you if i put my hand out i could touch them.. it didn't take long for me to biff it on the ice either, we were pulling of to the side of the road and i hit my brakes right as we went over this huge patch of ice and i wiped out.. no harm to the bike or me though, everyone around us was laughing.. im really starting to love Japanese people and all the weird things they do here, its really funny, people are either terrified of us or want to be our friends cause we are American.. people start running away when they see us walk towards them its really funny.

We do mostly housing all day and when we knock peoples doors the old lady's answer and look up at us and start backing away almost shaking and then shut the door, its really really funny. but most people just say they are budhdist and slam the door.. well thats pretty much was has been going on. well for the christmas list all that really comes to mind is lots of candy and food!! they are not real big on treats out here, so like Receses and jerky, and more milano cookies, stuff like that would be way sweet!! and pictures would be nice! and some more spending money in my account is always a good thing!! oh and who am i getting presents for? are we doing the name thing?? let me know!!

love elder lawler!!
(dont forget to forward this to everyone!!)

Nov. 19th - First Letter from Japan!!!!

k well i just wrote a huge letter to you but it got deleted, really un happy about it but oh well... to some it up, i love it here everything is amazing its really hard with the language, but i am trying my best, improving a little at a time is my goal.. otaru is a really pretty area. the ward is amazing. today we went to the aquarium with some of them and presindent dainels his wife and daughter came too. way fun. my companion is amazing and is super helpful, i love serving with him, he is a fun guy too.. it snowed for the first time today, pretty cold but i am fine. i do need a better backpack though, we track a lot, and the mtc bag sucks. the one my companion has that he recomended was north face black bag. its called the heckler or something like that.. if you cant find it a black one with good straps, with cushion will do. all my mail just send to me with the mission home address and they forward stuff to me, so on transfers you dont miss mail.. i would love to get some mail one of these days.. will you email my friends, and tell them the same message? that would be really nice.. the mission president is putting together a presentation of all the missionaries and wants to use my tennis dvd i had. so if you could send him a copy a soon as possible that would be great!! i also need you to send me some pictures of the family all together, and the more recent the better. and i need some of my playing tennis i know there are a lot on the computer. but people are always asking my to see pictures and i dont have any. the mission work is hard, people look at us and say no because we are christian, and say the are buhhdist right away, it can be very furrustrating. but we try hard. we have one guy named ishiura who is really into our lessons, we have a bunch of other potentials too so i hope all turns out well.. the language is really hard. but im doing my best. food is good, so far no throw ups so that is nice.. well im running out of time, sorry i wrote you a huge letter, and tryed to send it and it deleted! really mad about that. send me some love in the mail, i am excited for cristina give my love to everyone, i would love to hear how everyone is doing. Japan is great, really different but i love it. love you!! elder lawler

The city faces the Ishikari Bay, and it has long served as the main port of the bay. With its many historical buildings, Otaru is one of Japan's leading tourist destinations. Also, because it is located within a 25 minute-drive from Sapporo, the city recently has seen growth as a bedroom community.

As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 137,693 and the density of 580.11 persons per km². The total area is 243.13 km². Although it is the largest city in Shiribeshi, it is not the capital of the subprefecture (that title goes to the more centrally-located Kutchan).

[edit] Geography
Otaru is a port town on the coast of the Sea of Japan in northern Shiribeshi subprefecture. At one time, a canal ran through the middle of the town, but now only a portion of it has been preserved. The southern portion of the city is characterized by the steep slopes of various mountains--notably Mount Tenguyama, a popular winter skiing location--and the altitude of the land sharply drops from the mountains to the seaside. The land available between the coast and mountains has been almost completely developed, and the developed part of the city on the mountain slopes is called Saka-no-machi, or "Hill town", including hills affectionately named Funamizaka (Boat-view Hill) and Jigokuzaka (Hell Hill).

Letters from 9/23 and 9/24 and 10/7

Daniel letter: 9/23/08

Last Sunday we heard a talk on the Savior by Elder Jensen and it was the best one that I’ve ever heard. Here are a few of the excerpts:

-God chose Jesus to come to the earth. Satan was not chosen and became angry. Satan leaves and takes many with him.
-Jesus tells of His purpose
-Man will reject Jesus even after all that He would do for us.
-Jesus suffered for us so that man might come unto Him.
-We are not condemned for our sins if we will but repent
-If we have faith in Christ, we can do all things!

This list has helped me to understand and strengthen my relationship with Christ!

9/24/08

Sorry about your injuries Daddio, thanks for the toll house pie and other goodies.
I could use another sports update…

(He included some kanji symbols that I can’t duplicate…one was for strength)

Our lives that we live as members of the church must be a symbol to the world.

We must stand as a witness of Christ in all things and in all places.

10/7/08

Thanks for the camera! I’m sending you a memory card with a bunch of pictures on it (they will also be here on the blog). There’s also a video on it (he told us to ask Becca and Jamey how to put it on the blog site….we’ll ask and see…

No, I did not sing in the MTC choir at the Priesthood session of conference….I know that it wasn’t like me to miss out on such an opportunity…

General conference was AWESOME. Every talk you could tell was inspired and the Spirit was great…it was so so good and I got so much out of it! (I took 19 pages of notes!)

My two favorite were the talk on Christian Courage by Elder Hales, and on Hope by Pres. Uchtdorf. It seemed like every talk was centered on missionary work. Loved the talk by Sis . Allred where she told everyone to write to missionaries.

We had heard the Pres. Monson story about the missionary who kept complaining about
Spanish being too hard to learn until he was forced to go to a Japanese class instead…then he thought that Spanish wasn’t so hard after all.

We do get a certain amount of respect here in the MTC for learning Japanese, which is kind of nice.

Last week my companion and I gave our first discussion in ‘ni hongo’ (Japanese). I won’t say that it was a bomb, but it wasn’t great either…somewhere in between. The hardest part was trying to answer their questions. We could understand them for the most part, but it was hard to answer them because our language was so limited.

The new Japanese missionaries are coming tomorrow…Our teachers told us that we couldn’t speak English to them for the next couple of days. I feel kind of bad for them because they are going to be pretty intimidated by the language. But hopefully it will challenge them and help them to work harder.

It’s awesome to hang out some with the Hansens. And it’s nice to be able to joke around and laugh (some of my other newer friends here don’t laugh very much).

Please get my Ryan Wong and Jarom Patterson’s addresses. I want to write to them because I’ve been thinking about them and wondering how they’re doing.

Thanks for the support and the letters.

(weird characters meaning something)

konichiwa kazoku!! gangideska? life at the mtc continues to get better and better everyday!! answer some questions real quick, dear elder is the best way to send letters! so keep using that... i l ove the packages keep sending them love getting stuff! just picked up sister gilletts treats you sent her!! everyone is excited. so last week as i said was utchdorf! He was amazing! everything we have done this week has just shown me how important this work is! i see elder barney all time! i got all the stuff mom sent me about the hansens talk! that is awesome i knew they would do good!! thanks mom for going there and taking all the notes! i can feel the spirit they brought just from reading thier letters.. cant wait till they get here they are going to love it!!! this is byt far the happiest i have ever been!! ni hongo is still impossible but im doing my best and i know the lord will help me.. well yesterday was probably my most spiritual experience i have ever had since i have been here!!!! every monday we go to the referal center, where we get on the phones and call people who have requested church media products or book of moromons, stuff like that.. the week before when we went i called 51 people in a row, and got 51 answering machines in a row! it was bad! was super bumed.. but this week i could tell was going to be different i had been praying that i might be able to talk to someone and share with them the message of our church.. sure enough the first person on my call list was a women named maria, on her bio it said got a church video liked it but STRONG, STRONG CATHOLIC.. so i was a little intimidated, so i called she picked up, there is a call script you are supposed to follow but since i had never called anyone who actually picked up i dindnt know how to use it, so i was on my own.. we started talking and she very very strongly expressed her views on her church that she like some things about ours but there was no way she could deny her church, she said missionaries had talked to her but she insisted that no one could change her.. she went on for a while, i just sat and listened. i was a little blown away but than i just listened to the spirit and started talking to her.. i said that she was right, no one can change her, i than asked her if she believed that she could talk to god through prayer, and started going over the things we both believed in.. she agreed, so i asked her if she believed if god answers her prayers, she said yes, i said do you believe you can ask god anything and he will answer, she agreed once again. I than challenged her to ask god if the message i was tell her, about the moromon church is true and bore my testimony, she was silent, but told me she would. i than asked her if she had heard of any of our books, she said the elders gave her a copy of our bible, but she did not want the book of moromon. i asked her what she thought of the bilbe, she said it was different than hers, she told me some of the differences, and i explained some things she was concerend with. i than testified what the book of moromon was, the message that it has, that it brings joy. i said you read our bible right, she said yes, i asked her if she would instead read from our book of moromon, and testified again of its message. she was silent for a while and than agreed.. i told her the missionaries would know next time they saw her to give her a book, she lives in puerto rico and sees them a lot i guess.. This phone call ended after 25 minutes and it is my testimony that i was able to talk to her because of my willingness to obey the commandments and be blessed with the spirit to know what to say to maria.. after i hung up i felt as though my entire body was burning, ever limb of my entire complex was warm, the spirit was with me, i know that this is the only way missionaries can teach the gospel. i am overwhelmed with joy that god blessed me with the ability to have this experiecnce. i cant wait till i get out in the field, and meet people face to face like maria. hope all is well with you i love you, you are in my hearts, i am still learning from your example, your letters motivate me and bless me.

Tuesday, Sept. 9th

konichiwa!! week two is under way! it seems like i have been here for a lot longer than that though! its weird to think if i was going english speaking i would be leaving next week in stead i am going to be here for another 10 weeks!! ha ha but i love it here so i will get over it. so as i said before there still isn't a minute to spare! always either working on ni hongo or am studying the scriptures.. its such a blessing to be hear, i try to read Elder Bruce McConkie (don't know if that spelling is right)quote on missionary work titled "How great is my calling" i have not read it once without feeling the spirit! it gets me excited. well japanese contiues to get more confusing, ha ha but i just roll with it. i use to get discouraged but i am no longer able to. I am too blessed to have anything to complain about right now! I have never been a part of something so significant in my life. well on tuesday Elder Cook came! he was great, i am hoping that tonight we will have another apostle come talk to us!! but some things elder cook said were:
Study preach my gospel, he played a major part in writing the 'preach my gospel' and said that he could not take credit for what was written, he said "it is almost as if this book was written by the other side of the veil."
he said to teach around commitments.
through missionaries examples we can strengthen the church and demonstrate how to serve the lord.
be aware
BE BOLD
we taught our first discussion this week in the rc and it didn't go like we planned but it showed us what are weaknesses were, and i'm ready for this week!!
Usually the best part of the day is when we have gym time!!! I love playing hoops here, its really the only thing we get to do for exercise. well the competition here is good. the one tall red head kid who played for pg, that graduated the same year as i did is here, we usually play together and do work! there are a couple others who played at uvu and snow college so its a lot of fun! i pull my weight though.
so our japanese district is on the same floor as the korean district, and we are both on the same schedules for everything, dinner, gym, and any meetings. So there is an un-spoken rivalry between the Korean zones and the Japanese zones. its pretty funny. well this went on for a while, until one Saturday night, about 2 months ago, the koreans challenged the japanese to a sing off! called to serve. where both zones go head to head and sing the first verse in their native languages, and the second verse in English, what ever zone is the loudest wins! it is one of the most intense things i have ever been a part of!! the hole 5 floors of our building comes to watch us, they all have cameras and what not to record this! its is crazy! usually the japanese win, but its hard to tell cause each side is so loud... if you guys ever send me the camera i can show you.. which brings me to my list of things i need:
the camera, with two memory cards. the older missionaries told me to do this cause that way i can send you one card and you can upload pictures and all that, and while im waiting to get the other card back i can still be taking pictures... make sense? i thought it was a really good idea.
I need shirts and a hoodie!! i didnt think i would be having gym 5 times a week so i go through a lot of them, just buy me those costco white shirts i use to get, size large, mom knows the ones.
For a sweatshirt send me the brown/golden colored jordan one, its in my stuff in bags i hid in the storage room in the basement. KEeep sending me letters! i love getting them, dear elder is the fastest way, it came before the other letters you sent. cookies are awesome everyone loved them, send more!!! love you all tons, ran out of time got to go i will check this in a couple of hours so write back soon if you have any questions!!
Love elder lawler

Ohiogozaimas!

Sept. 3, 2008

Dear Mom & Dad,
Ohiogazaimas! Well I have almost been here a whole week! Seems like I have been here for months though, you truly do get lost in the work you do here. The feeling here is amazing! It's kind of like the spirit that's at a fast and testimony meeting times 10 and that's about how it feels in class. Well let's start with my companion, he showed up late from flight delays so at first I wasn't sure if he would be coming at all, luckly he showed up! His name is Elder Lemme from Oak Harbor, Washington he is pretty cool, wears clip on ties and zip on ties...he is really a great guy. We are awesome teaching companions and work great together.

The first day of Ni hongo (jappanese) was extremely humbling! I think my problem was I expected to learn everything the first day, and I think instead I learned nothing! but since I have learned to slow it down, study as much as I can and be faithful I will learn. Everyday is a busy day we either learn Ni hongo or we study the gospel. Simple but I have not had a moment yet where I'm not doing one or the other, but I love it! My desire to learn is so strong! I want to learn everything about the language and it's almost unbearable for me to sit while someone is speaking Ni hongo. I have strong righteous desires in my heart and I know that will pay off as long as I am faithful and call down for the powers of heaven! Other than class there is not much that goes on, I get along with the Elders in my room and in my zone everyone is awesome and extremely intelligent, kind of a nerdy bunch but I love them. What's new with the Lawler Haller? Fill me in!!

Just got back from a devotional by Elder Quintan Cook of the Quorum of the 12! Amazing I will tell you about it more later. It's about 9:15 pm on Tuesday to give you an idea of what's going on.

Akashi Shitai to omoimas wa senten ga shinjtsu datto shitte masu. Mormon sho wa kotoba ga kamisana datto shitte imasu. Kazoku wa kamisama shitte maso. iesu kiristo wa onko ga kamisama. Ieso kiristo no mina ni yotte skashi shimas. amen *

Ai Shitte iru yo,
Elder Lawler

1st Letter !

August 29, 2008

Mom & Dad,

I am alive and well!! they are letting us write tonight to tell you we are okay and what not. My companion is Elder Lemme he is from Washington he seems like a really cool guy! It's really amazing the kind of bond you feel here with everyone. It's extremely easy to talk to people. I wish I could say by body felt as good as my spirit but I can't. I had to get my tetnis shot because it had been longer than ten years and it KILLED! Felt like a big punch to the arm, and I also had to get hepetitous A shot that wasn't so bad.

Overall the day was pretty overwhelming but hearing everyone speak Japanese made me want to learn so so bad! I can't stand no knowing what they are saying, needless to say I'm not worried about my study habits, no more procrastination. Our P-day is on Tuesday. We can email our families so send me an email and I will write you back, but letters are preferred from all!!

Love to tons! Tell Grandma & Papa and everyone that came to the MTC how much it meant to me and I love you all !! Elder Lawler

Sunday the 24th through MTC Wed the 27th

A couple of notes on the final days of Daniel Lawler, before he turned into Elder Lawler for two years...

Sunday: Great day...Daniel did not share his talk with me (unusual, because Dad usually always got to help with a scripture here, a thought there or a little grammar or re-writing...). We found out why in his remarks on having a righteous Dad...I was very humbled and touched deeply by his kind and heart felt remarks.

After the talk, many of Daniel's friends remarked (almost in surprise) at what a good job he had done...finally Daniel said "So, did you think I was going to be horrible or what?" To which one friend responded,"No, but you were like, really 'comfortable' up there speaking...we hadn't seen that coming."

Meal #1: Immediately after sacrament, a good lunch for family and close friends.
Meal #2: Mostly desserts, a lot of the ward members came. Many were generous with
monies for the mission fund (whch became part of the bicycle fund...we are
told that he will spend most of his mission on a bike).
Meal #3: 10pm to 1 am...parents invited but did not participate...Daniel and his
homies only...

Monday and Tuesday...final sporting activities, final meals, final gatherings of friends...Grandma & Papa have been here sharing in all the activities, blessed to have them here.

Tuesday night at 9 pm...Stake President of the LDS Church (he's the one who sets missionaries apart for two years) came to our house. He was a busy man as he was setting apart 4 other young men that same night from our Alpine North Stake.

Blessing included some of the following:

-gift of tongues, ability to learn Japanese well
-love for the people that he will serve
-affinity for the local diet (Dad guffawed a bit on this one, as we have teased Daniel about his 'non-seafood' diet for a long time)
-desire to help others and improve their lives.

Then...Daniel was turned into Elder Lawler...and even went to bed at 10:30 pm for the first time in ______________ (none of us could remember).

A few of us shared our thanks for one another and Daniel's friends (all of them either already have calls to serve missions, or will go when of age).
Daniel said some touching comments of appreciation and love to his friens and his family.

Wednesday:

Meal #4: Breakfast with all kinds of goodies, including pumpkin waffles with buttery, nummie syrup. Last visit with Daniel's buds...

MTC: Not as bad as it was cracked up to be. There were MANY helpers/ushers getting families to where they needed to be and missionaries to where they needed to be.

Got the Elder Lawler name tag (with some gibberish underneath the name)

Short 'fireside' with 3 speakers and a couple of songs...and a video clip...then
Sayonara! Missionaries to the right, families to the left...and they were off.

Daniel was VERY ready to go...minimal emotions, he was off and running...and doing the MTC shuffle...

ONWA-DO (onward) Elder Lawler!

Elder Lawler Goes to the MTC

Impact of a Righteous Father

The Impact of a Righteous Father
Elder Daniel Lawler
Farewell Sacrament Meeting Talk
August 23, 2008

Can a righteous father have an impact on his children? The answer is obvious, yes. My family is a perfect example of how one righteous father can truly impact his children. The impact that my own righteous father has had in my life is so apparent that not only has it affected me on the inside but also a lot of what I do on the outside.

What makes a righteous father?

There are multiple factors that can contribute to making a man righteous. I have chosen to talk about what I think makes a righteous father through the example of my own dad:
The first thing that comes to mind when I think of my father is all the fun we have together. My dad is full of life. We rarely spend time together without either playing a sport, watching a sport, or just playing games. Anyone who is a patient of my dads knows Dr. Bill is full of excitement. The movie theater is a good illustration of the enthusiasm my dad has for life; there is always one person who laughs, claps, yells, and is a lot louder than the rest of the crowd; that man is my father. A memory that my older sister Becca loves to recall is when my dad went to see the movie Hook. Near the end of the movie as Robin Williams is remembering that he is really Peter Pan, he has to learn to crow. Guess who else had to show everyone in the movie theater that he also knows how to crow? That’s right, he stood up and crowed. This movie influenced him so much because of the idea of staying young at heart that he had my mom make him a Peter Pan outfit and he had Peter Pan day at his office, crowing all day long. (The movie the cousins went to was Rocketeer and he just stood and clapped.) Any time the family is together there is one common interest we all share, we all love to have a good time together and have fun! In order to have a successful family home evening, there had to be a great super fun activity. There is just no other way our parents could get six kids’ attention without dong something fun. Needless to say there is never a dull moment when you’re around my dad. A righteous father is full of joy.

My father loves to spend time with his family, as a child some of the fondest memories I have are when my father would come home from work. He would rush into the house full of joy often times screaming and shouting to the family “I’m home”; it would then turn into a game as he would come running into the house no matter where I was inside our house or outside our house—I always knew when dad got home. I would drop what ever was doing to immediately run to find my dad and start playing games. Looking back I am amazed just how much energy that must have taken out of my dad, having just worked an 8 hour day having seen patients all day and being busy, he would come home with such energy it was as if he hadn’t worked all day. In any sport I played I always knew who my number one fan was, my dad! I can’t think of a game I have ever played in where I couldn’t look to the sidelines and find my dad cheering me on with a loud voice and big smile. My dad has not only always been there for me at sports, but also wherever I am. No matter what friend’s house I was at, no matter what time I called, I always knew my dad would be there for me. From an early age my father made it a point of telling all of us kids that no matter where we were or what time we called, he will always come get us, no matter what! The stories are endless of late nights when any of us kids would call for a ride, and my father was always there to pick us up. A righteous father is a family man!

I have turned many times to my dad as most kids have for many things. Like most kids the first thing we think to turn to our dads for is money. But my dad has always provided me with more than just money. My dad has always either shown me or taught me by example how to make the right decisions, sometimes it’s not always easy to show me how to make the right decisions and sometimes he has used guilt trips to help me see the right and wrong choices. My father hasn’t done this by telling me what’s wrong, what’s right, and being forceful, he usually with sincerity and a soft voice just asks me. As a young kid I remember taking lots of car trips with my dad because with one of his church callings he had to travel a lot. On car rides we would talk a lot and listen to books on tape. One time I remember talking to my father and sharing my 9 year old point of view with him on girls and women. Very ignorantly I exclaimed that I didn’t know what all the commotion was about with women being able to do all the same stuff us guys could do. I said how all women need to do is just clean the house take care of the kids and make dinner. Leave all the rest of the stuff to us guys… clearly I had no idea what I was talking about and was obviously wrong. It wasn’t the answer that stuck with me that he gave me but it was how he handled his response and it has stuck to me this day. He very calmly with a quite voice said to me “Dano, if you just said what you said to me to a group of women, you would find yourself in a lot of trouble!” Instead of telling me how stupid I just sounded or how dumb of a comment that was, he just softly told me that wasn’t a good idea to share with women what I had just told him. That response led me to figure out for myself that my naïve point of view was wrong. With all the excitement my father shares and as loud as he is I cannot recall a time where my father has ever yelled at me, I cannot recall a time where my father has gotten into a serious argument with me. I have never been afraid of my dad. I do not think fathers should be people you fear, someone you are scared to talk to, or someone you are afraid to tell the truth to because he was always honest with us. LDS.Org says, “A parent who admits his own wrongs and honestly strives to overcome them is trying to become perfect. His honest behavior invites his children to be honest. Parents who honor the covenants and promises they make with God and men teach integrity to their children. Often times in today’s world you see kids that will screw up, do something stupid, and usually the first thing that comes to mind is, my dad is going to kill me! In my life my father has never been criticizing, I have never had to fear whatever actions I did. There was nothing in my mind that was so bad that I couldn’t tell my dad, and it is for those reasons that I respected him, and I chose to do the right things not out of fear but out of love, and because I would never want to disappoint him. A righteous father is soft spoken and approachable.

Having grown up in the church I never had to find out if the gospel was true on my own till I was much older. Through all my childhood like many other kids my testimony of the gospel coasted on that of my parents. My father has always found ways to bless my family’s life through the gospel. My father hasn’t been known to be a preacher but more of an example. I would also put something about being an example and serving a mission somewhere. Dad was the first missionary to leave from Waterville and always set a good example even when it wasn’t easy. He lives the way he taught us to live, which makes it easier to listen to him and believe him. Something about how he told stories about his mission and it made you excited to serve a mission as well. He was always strong in the gospel in a place where there were few members. He was a counselor in the branch presidency at 17!

It is thorough example the others learn. I have gained testimony through the faith that my father has put in the Lord. Any time a member of our family has had to make an important decision my father always required before we made our final decision that we do a pro con list, in which you list the good things that would come from about the decision and the bad things that would come from about the decision. After a verdict is reached he then asked that we take it to the Lord and ask him in prayer. My father would offer his help in praying if we wanted, or have us pray on our own. In any family activity my dad would make sure that the Lord was involved, on long car rides we would pray for safety, on campouts we would have some kind of gospel lesson. Some things were mandatory, but usually our father always gave us the choice of what to do. At the age of 17 we had the choice to attend church, if we didn’t want to go anymore he would let us stay at home, but usually first leaving us with a slight guilt trip. There were some of us who chose not to go, and some who did, but I can say that without the choice I would not have gone to church because I wanted to but because my father made me. My father always gave me agency. During the last year when I attended college at Southern Virginia University I lived in the dorms. For all of us guys living in the dorms, it was our first real experience living away from home, and no longer under the rules of our parents. When Sunday mornings would come around often times it was a hassle to go to church and most kids didn’t want to, mostly because when they were kids they had been forced to go all those years and now that their parents couldn’t make them go, they didn’t. But because of my father’s decision to let me choose before, I wanted to go to church and I did not miss out on the blessings and teachings each Sunday that so many of those kids did. A righteous father is a man of god!

These are just some of the many things that I believe makes a righteous father and I know that there are so many more things that make up a righteous father. In closing I would like to share one of the harder parts of being a righteous father, that even if you are a righteous father and you are doing all the things that you are supposed to it does not always mean that you will see immediate results and impact the lives of your children. Often times it might seem as though you are not getting through to your kids. That despite what you do your kids rebel, I have even seen this in my own family. That my father and mother were doing everything they could and making the right decisions, but for some reason their kids wouldn’t accept their example or counsel. But no matter how bad things got, no matter how useless sometimes they felt, they never gave up. They endured through the bad never giving up hope and faith. It took some kids longer than others to realize their mistakes, but if you asked anyone in my family today, every member of my family could tell you they are in a better place, living a better life than what they used to. Being a righteous father is not always easy.

While writing this talk it has been so clear to me how hand in hand being a righteous father directly correlates with being like our Father in Heaven. The strongest attributes a righteous father can have are those that he learns from our Heavenly Father. A righteous father is like unto our Father in Heaven.

My testimony………
